5 Quick Tips for Cleaning Your Room

Not my room, but I wish it were.
I've often been told that I am a very organized person, and indeed I do take pride in being neat, but despite this my room somehow turns into something like a tornado wreck at the end of every week. Even if I don't do anything but surf the web all day, clothes will end up everywhere, and stacks of papers and random items accumulate on my desk. A messy room severely affects my ability to concentrate and my mood in general, but luckily over the years I've picked up (no pun intended) a few tricks on how to clean up quickly. Hopefully you'll find this useful too!

1. Do it in the morning.
Obviously, certain mornings, such as weekdays when you have school, are not appropriate for cleaning your room. However on weekend mornings, if you get an early start on something relatively straightforward such as organizing, you will be more motivated to do work throughout the day. For me, it also helps that I know exactly where I put each item, so as I'm working on other things I don't have to stress about having to find it throughout the day.

2. Play happy music.
It's a lot easier to be doing anything, especially boring cleanup, when you have music to keep you upbeat. Put together a playlist of fifteen to twenty-five songs that you can play every time you have to clean your room to get yourself into the swing of things. You can also correspond each song to a different part of your room or a different type of item so you can stay focused and get things done in a timely manner. It's also helpful to play the songs out loud instead of through earbuds, because you don't have to worry about the cords getting tangled. I usually listen to this playlist on shuffle because I like to pretend that I'm more badass than I really am. Don't judge.

3. Go all the way.
If you're not in a time crunch, take your time with making sure that the job gets done correctly. Don't just stuff all of your clothes into your drawer because the next time you're looking for a specific shirt, it will be just as hard to find. It doesn't take long at all to make sure that things are folded and stacked properly, not to mention all of the space it saves.

4. Just start anywhere.
One of the hardest parts of tackling a problem is figuring out where to start. Luckily, with cleaning, when the mess is everywhere, there isn't a right or wrong way to begin. Simply pick up whatever is closest to you and put it in its place. Then, pick up the next item, and the next item, and before you know it, everything is where it should be. Alternatively, a method that I like to use is to gather up everything that needs to be put away and dump it in a giant pile on my bed. That way, all the things are in a central place that I can easily reference, and I don't need to double check all the places where I normally stash things when I'm being lazy.

Messy!
Dump it all on the bed...
Neat-o!

5. Roll with it.
Speaking of saving space, as you can see in the previous picture, it helps quite a lot to roll up your clothes instead of folding. I have a tiny closet, so I use a chest of drawers to store most of my clothing. Rolling my clothes allows better visibility, as things are not stacked on top of each other. With pants it's easy – fold in half and roll from top to bottom. For shirts it's similar, but make sure you tuck in the sleeves before folding in half. In addition to utilitarian use of space and greater accessibility, another benefit of rolling your clothes is that it will also result in less creases.

Bonus Tip: Sweep the floors.
I'll admit, I very rarely do this, but the times I do (or the times my mother forces me to), it makes a huge difference. Stepping into the room automatically feels fresher and cleaner, and it's also healthier because I'm not breathing in as much dust and cat hair. If you have one, you can use a mini vacuum for getting around tight spots and cleaning away the dust bunnies tucked into the corners and crevasses every so often so you don't have to rearrange all of the furniture.

Hopefully those tips will help you keep your room neat, at least for a while. Let me know in the comments what you think or what tricks you use to stay organized. ∆
