This last week I was pretty much on the verge of a panic attack every day from all the stuff that had to be done, with no time or way to escape. College apps, regular schoolwork, speech and debate, and all the demands of life – the list goes on and on. Luckily my friend Diana can drive now, so we planned to go out to eat on Saturday, but then a little slot of free time opened up on Wednesday after school. I hadn't eaten anything at all that day, because I had been in a rush that morning and forgot to bring lunch, so when we saw a chance, we took it. It was a very spontaneous decision, and to me it pretty much felt like a
kind of moment, except with food instead of clothes. Anyhow, the food was amazing, and the restaurant itself was a quaint, retro experience that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Menu & Service – 5/5
I liked how all the things in the burger were clearly listed out easy to read. I had no problem finding something that I liked, and, for people who want to watch their weight, the calories of each item are clearly listed next to each. The waiter was also very patient and friendly, something I appreciated a lot as a person who struggles with literally every public interaction.
Food – 4/5
Freshly made and delicious. I ordered a Bacon Cheddar Single, which is smoked bacon, double cheddar cheese, iceberg lettuce, fresh tomato, white onion & special sauce. Diana had the Route 66, with swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions & mayonnaise. I was floored by the sheer size of the burger as soon as it arrived; I was expecting an In-N-Out sized sandwich, but this one was massive and had to be held with both hands. At the first bite, it was clear that this was a gourmet burger. All the flavors were in perfect balance and there was nothing artificial about the taste. Towards the end the bread got quite soggy from the sauce, and the burger started falling apart. I tried eating it layer by layer towards the end, but it was so filling that I just couldn't finish it (talk about a food coma, wow). The fries were piping hot, and I made the mistake of trying to eat a whole fry at once, almost burning my mouth in the process, but they were so delicious.
Price – 3/5
$10 for burger and fries are a little expensive for my tastes (I didn't pay for it at the time, but still). However, the quality of the food made it worth it. Nonetheless, I wouldn't mind if they took a little out of the size of the burger, and maybe dropped the price about $2, but that's just my opinion as a petite, broke high schooler.
Atmosphere & Decor – 5/5
Everything was clean and neat, and the entire restaurant was decorated with interesting things, from the coat hooks between the booths, to the (non-functional) jukebox on the table, to the old-fashioned employee etiquette poster in the bathroom.
I honestly didn't even know this restaurant chain existed until now, but it's definitely one I would visit again. If you are in Almaden, you will find a location at 840 Blossom Hill Rd, San Jose, CA 95123 in the Santa Teresa Main Street Shopping Center.
