Food Friday #017 – Gypsy's Trattoria Italiana

I was debating if I should post this or not because I didn't take many good pictures, but there's really not much to say in these Food Friday posts. I think from now on they will just be short featurettes with a rating at the bottom. Anyhow, this is Gypsy's on Durant Ave. It's a small Italian place and the food is oh-so good (though my roommate does not recommend the cream sauce dishes). I had the Chicken and Broccoli penne pasta, and let me tell you, after days in a row of gummy dining hall pasta, this was a gustatory transmogrification. In short, it was really good. I honestly can't even describe how good it is to finally have non-dry chicken and non-undercooked or overcooked broccoli, and don't even get me started on the texture of the pasta. Maybe it was only so good because of the contrast to the dining hall food, but seriously, if you're in Berkeley and you're looking for a place to eat, try Gypsy's. Note from my roommate: don't get the cream sauce, it might give you a stomachache.

»Portions: It was late afternoon and I was pretty hungry when I sat down to eat, but the portion size was very filling, but not too much that I couldn't finish. 5/5
»Price: Let's be honest, I'm a broke college student. Everything is pretty expensive to me. I believe this dish was approximately $10, so it's affordable, but I definitely wouldn't eat here every day. Tip: pay in cash whenever you can. Most places tack on an extra service charge for card, and that adds up pretty quickly. 3/5
»Value: Despite the fact that I hate spending money, I'd say that the meal was worth it. It was filling and delicious, and I don't regret it. 4.5/5
»Cleanliness: I did not see any people wiping down tables, and the table behind me had dirty plates left on it the entire time I was eating there. Not the best, but it wasn't unbearable. 2.5/5
»Atmosphere: It almost felt like a fast food restaurant as there were no servers or waiters and everything moved pretty quickly. Definitely not a relaxed place to eat. Personally, I do not prefer this. 1.5/5
»Service: Ordering was easy and food was ready without a long wait time. Other than that, not much interaction with the staff. 3.5/5
»Overall: Would visit again, sparingly. 3.5/5 ◊
